..this engine has lots of new good ideas...like easy access to the
clutch....But!!!

if this engine drops a valve (which was not uncommen with the last 1200)
or just gets damaged from a fall on one side with damage to cylinder or piston
then the engine needs a complete rebuild since you cannot replace
the piston or the cylinder individually! A rebuild on one of these will be
very complicated and costly! Engine would have to be removed from bike
an split

IMHO, while the new engine addressed problems/inconveniences of the older mill, it also compromises on the drive train uniqueness. Gone are the automotive derived drive trains where you have a lined up power flow to the rear wheel via crankshaft, clutch, transmission and drive shaft. The BMW motorcycle is more 「motorcycle」 now

The wet multi plates clutch pack is not new in motorcycle with longitudinal crankshaft, you can find them in the good old GL/CX Hondas and I believe Goldwings and Pan-European/STs have this clutch design too.

...yes, clutch ..i mean new for bmw...they kept the tractor technology alive very long ...interestingly on your photo the Cx 500/650 also
has moulded cylinders...with push rods so lower rpm! Still, am worried
about the cylinder damage though...even if BMW manages to make
a solid valve train..there is stil easy damage from dropping the bike ..

It is a use and throw engine.

Probably more cost effective to ask the robots in Berlin plant to assemble a new one than dealing with parts inventory, technical personnel training just to replace a statistically rarely worn part of the engine
